Product Description

Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) was born in 1858 of Dakota (Minnesota Sioux) parents on the Santee Reservation near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. His mother dead and his father captured during the “Minnesota Sioux Uprising”, his grandparents raised Eastman. He was reunited with his father and began school at the age of fifteen. Graduating from Dartmouth in 1887, he continued on and was awarded his MD from Boston University.

After graduating he was given a job at the Pine Ridge Agency treating the injuries sustained by the survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre. He spent the rest of his life helping Indian people cope with the changes to their world and trying to reconcile the opposing values and beliefs of white society and Sioux culture.

INDIAN BOYHOOD is the autobiographical work of Eastman’s memories as a free Dakota Indian. He writes about child raising, religion, games, storytelling, tribal government and name giving. His name, Ohiyesa (Winner) – pronounced “oh-HEE-yess-ah” was given to him after his village won a lacrosse game against friendly rivals.
