Product Description

“In a certain barren corner of New England, on a bleak November day of the year 1620, a little weather-beaten ship gently rose and fell on the long ground swell that swept on past her to the shores beyond…. ”

So begins Samuel Drakes’ story of the history surrounding Plymouth Rock. A ship called the Mayflower, chartered by John Carver, a leader of the Separatist congregation, carried 37 congregation members and their leaders William Bradford and William Brewster. Also on board were Myles Standish and John Alden, as well as other colonists who were to be taken along at the insistence of the London businessmen who were helping to finance the expedition.

After first dropping anchor off Provincetown Harbor, the settlers soon discovered Plymouth Harbor on the western side of Cape Cod Bay, and made their historic landing. The Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony in New England in 1620.

Through On Plymouth Rock, Drake has given as much of William Bradford’s own classic account of the story as possible. Revealing the steps by which the first New England colony was founded, it is historically rich and educational.
